Serenity is the amazing conclusion to Joss Whedon’s cult classic (and short-lived) television series Firefly. Set in the year 2517, the story follows the adventures of the renegade crew of a “Firefly-class” spaceship as they struggle with both sides of the law, learning to live in this final frontier. In the film, a new and tenacious assassin is sent to recapture one of their number who is telepathic, and the crew finds themselves in possession of information that could alter the face of the galaxy. According to Whedon’s vision:
“Nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today”.
That notion alone, plus a plethora of other interesting narrative and ensemble character elements, made for great discussion at a rousing film and theology event. The audio exploration of below contains spoilers and assumes you’ve seen the film as we look deeper into the timeless truths and applicability.
